BALTIMORE — Pete Alonso homered twice, including a two-run shot in the eighth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Monday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Toronto scored all three of its runs in the first inning against Shane Baz. Nathan Lukes singled home Brett Bateman, George Springer singled home Alejandro Kirk, and Sean Keys followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Lukes to make it 3-0.
Alonso answered in the bottom of the first with his 39th home run of the season, off Trey Yesavage. Yesavage worked two innings, allowing the one run on one hit while striking out three. He threw 40 pitches.
Baltimore cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning when Gunnar Henderson hit his 24th home run of the season, off Chad Dallas. Henderson finished 3-for-4 on the night, adding a triple in the fourth inning and a single in the eighth.
The Orioles took the lead in the eighth. Mason Fluharty walked pinch-hitter Christian Franklin, and Tyler Rogers took over on the mound. Alonso then hit his 40th home run of the season to left field, a two-run shot that put Baltimore in front 4-3. Alonso drove in three of the Orioles' four runs.
Baz allowed three runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out two. Yennier Cano earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Rico Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save. Rogers took the loss.
Toronto was held to six hits, all of them singles. Springer had two of the hits and drove in a run. Each team finished with six hits, and neither team committed an error.
