Brewers rally from four down to beat Dodgers 6-4 and sweep their way to the World Series
LOS ANGELES — The Milwaukee Brewers are going to the World Series.
Down 4-0 after two innings on Thursday night, Milwaukee scored six unanswered runs to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 at Dodger Stadium, complete a four-game sweep of the National League Championship Series and advance to the World Series.
Los Angeles built its lead in the second inning against Milwaukee pitcher Dustin May. Andy Pages singled to centre to score Kyle Tucker for the first run, and Shohei Ohtani followed with a three-run home run to right-centre, scoring Teoscar Hernández and Pages to make it 4-0.
Milwaukee began the comeback in the fourth. Brice Turang and William Contreras both scored on a ground-rule double to right field by Jake Bauers, cutting the lead to 4-2.
The Brewers tied it in the fifth. Sal Frelick walked and scored on a ground-ball single to centre by David Hamilton to make it 4-3, and Tyler Glasnow left the game during the inning. Evan Phillips intentionally walked Turang and walked Contreras to load the bases, and Alex Vesia then walked Bauers on four pitches, forcing Hamilton home with the tying run. Christian Yelich grounded out to end the inning with the score 4-4.
Garrett Mitchell put Milwaukee in front for good leading off the sixth, hitting a solo home run to centre field off Tanner Scott for a 5-4 lead. It was Mitchell's second home run of the postseason.
The bullpen made the lead stand up. JoJo Romero pitched two scoreless innings for the win, and Aaron Ashby pitched the final three scoreless innings for the save. The biggest test came in the seventh, when Pages doubled, Enrique Hernández sacrificed him to third, and Ashby struck out Ohtani swinging on three pitches before getting Mookie Betts to ground out. Ashby stranded another runner at third in the eighth after a Will Smith double and a fielding error by Frelick.
Hamilton gave Milwaukee its insurance in the ninth, hitting a two-out solo home run to right-centre off Edwin Díaz. It was his first home run of the postseason, and it made it 6-4. Hamilton finished with two hits, two runs scored, two runs batted in and a stolen base. Ashby then retired Los Angeles in order in the ninth to finish the sweep.
Milwaukee won despite being outhit eight to five. Scott took the loss for Los Angeles. Ohtani drove in three of the Dodgers' four runs and struck out three times.
