MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers gave up four runs in the first inning on Saturday night, then came back over the next six innings and went ahead in the seventh, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 at American Family Field to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series.
Tampa Bay scored four runs off Logan Henderson in the top of the first. Chandler Simpson drove in Yandy Díaz with a single, and Junior Caminero followed with an RBI single of his own that scored Simpson, and Canadian Liam Hicks ended the scoring with a two-run blast to the upper deck that scored Caminero and made it 4-0.
Milwaukee answered in the bottom half against Drew Rasmussen. William Contreras singled home Jackson Chourio. Garrett Mitchell’s base hit came off the bat at 112 miles per hour, scoring Jake Bauers to cut the lead to 4-2. The fans erupted as the Brewers kept the line moving, and Rasmussen needed 89 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings.
Henderson lasted three innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned. The Milwaukee bullpen handled the rest: JoJo Romero, Dustin May, DL Hall, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby threw six scoreless innings between them.
The Brewers got within one in the fourth. Cooper Pratt scored when David Hamilton reached on a fielding error by first baseman Jonathan Aranda, the ball going between Aranda's legs.
Sal Frelick tied the game leading off the sixth, hitting a solo home run off Ian Seymour.
Pratt put Milwaukee in front in the seventh, his one-out single scoring Brice Turang for a 5-4 lead.
Tampa Bay threatened in the ninth. Jonny DeLuca doubled off Ashby, who struck out Victor Mesa Jr. and, after a groundout moved DeLuca to third, struck out Yandy Díaz to end the game and earn the save. Uribe picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Tyler Wells took the loss for the Rays.
The series shifts to Florida for Game 3 on Monday at Tropicana Field.
