Flames score six in rout of Kraken

CALGARY — Matt Coronato had a goal and three assists and the Calgary Flames beat the Seattle Kraken 6-2 on Friday night at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Morgan Frost opened the scoring on the power play at 2:32 of the first period, his fourth goal of the season, from Joel Farabee and Coronato. Frederick Gaudreau tied it 1-1 at 11:34 with his seventh, from Mackie Samoskevich and Chandler Stephenson.

Calgary scored three times in the second period. Aydar Suniev put the Flames ahead at 5:45 with his fourth, from Frost, and Matvei Gridin made it 3-1 on the power play at 8:43 with his fifth, from Farabee and Coronato. Farabee scored his fourth at 10:40, from Mikael Backlund and Coronato, for a 4-1 lead. Samoskevich cut it to 4-2 on the power play at 18:15 with his sixth, from Kaapo Kakko and Berkly Catton.

Coronato scored his third of the season 39 seconds into the third period, from Zach Whitecloud, and Ryan Strome closed the scoring at 18:14 with his third, from Gridin and Martin Pospisil.

"Klapka did a great job right off the bat getting us going, and in the second and third we were really playing our game the way we want to," Coronato said. "I thought it was a great effort from everyone."

Asked about his four-point night, Coronato said, "As a group, I thought everyone was kind of doing the right things and everything was kind of going our way. If we can just stick to that simple game and keep playing like that, I think things are going to be good."

Coronato also pointed to the power play, which went 2-for-2. "Every guy out there can score. Everyone's got a good shot, everyone's a good playmaker too," he said. "We've been simple with it and we've done a good job getting bodies in front of the net. I think we're all an option, which has been a lot of fun."

Head coach Ryan Huska said the night turned at the first intermission. "I thought we were slow and flat in the first period, and then we got to our game in the second and third and played well for the remainder of it," Huska said. "Adam tried to pull the guys into the game. I thought he did an excellent job stepping up in that situation. But I'm most pleased with how they reset themselves in the first intermission and got back to their game, which allows us to be a pretty good team."

"The power play was good," Huska added. "That helps for sure when they're feeling like they are right now. We started to do things the way we should be doing them."

Dustin Wolf made 20 saves for Calgary. Philipp Grubauer stopped 10 of 14 shots and took the loss for Seattle, and Joey Daccord stopped 11 of 13 in relief. Calgary outshot Seattle 27-22 and went 2-for-2 on the power play, while the Kraken went 1-for-4. Coronato, Farabee and Gridin were the game's three stars.
