CALGARY — The Memorial Cup officially arrives in Kelowna on Thursday as the city prepares to host major junior hockey’s championship event for the first time in more than two decades.

The Canadian Hockey League announced Wednesday that the annual “Arrival of the Cup” celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. PT with a community parade from City Park to Stuart Park ahead of Friday night’s tournament opener between the Kelowna Rockets and Kitchener Rangers at Prospera Place.

The Memorial Cup will arrive by Westbank First Nation Canoe Brigade before being ceremonially handed off from Indigenous Veterans to members of the Canadian Armed Forces, continuing one of the tournament’s longstanding traditions tied to remembrance and military service.

A formal welcome ceremony at Stuart Park will introduce the four teams competing in the 2026 tournament: the host Rockets, the Everett Silvertips, the Rangers, and the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.

The ceremony will also include cultural presentations from Westbank First Nation and remarks from CHL president Dan MacKenzie, Kelowna mayor Tom Dyas, and Member of Parliament Stephen Fuhr.

Kelowna is also set to unveil a commemorative Rockets jersey that will be worn during Friday’s opening game. The Memorial Cup host jersey tradition began in 2008 when the Rangers introduced special opening-game uniforms in support of The Royal Canadian Legion.

Since then, the CHL and its member leagues have raised more than $320,000 for the Legion’s Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund supporting veterans and their families.

“The Arrival of the Cup is one of the great traditions of the Memorial Cup, and this year’s celebration in Kelowna will be especially meaningful,” MacKenzie said in a statement released by the CHL.

The community celebration will continue Thursday evening with a kickoff event at Stuart Park featuring live music, food vendors, and fan activities as Kelowna shifts fully into tournament mode ahead of the opening weekend.

The 2026 Memorial Cup marks the return of the event to Kelowna for the first time since 2004, when the Rockets captured the national championship on home ice.

The tournament runs through May 31.
