VANCOUVER — BC Lions linebacker Darnell Sankey has been named the CFL's most outstanding defensive player for the 2026 season, the league announced Tuesday.

Sankey did not miss a defensive snap all season, playing all 998 for the Lions, and his 136 defensive plays led the CFL. He recorded a team-leading 114 tackles to go with 12 pass knockdowns, three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in 18 games.

"From day one, 'Sank' has set the standard for what we have wanted to build on defence," said Lions defensive coordinator Mike Benevides. "He's the epitome of a pro and the latest in a long line of great winners we've had here. From day one of training camp and the first defensive meeting in Kamloops, he's instilled greatness in our unit."

Sankey is the 11th player in Lions history to win the award, and it is the franchise's 16th win overall. The club's previous winners include Mathieu Betts (2023, 2025), Solomon Elimimian (2014, 2016), Adam Bighill (2015) and Cameron Wake (2007, 2008).

Sankey and the Lions now turn to the Western Final against the Edmonton Elks on Saturday (5:30 p.m.).
