TORONTO — Brady Lidster kicked an 11-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining to give the Toronto Argonauts a 33-30 win over the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday at BMO Field.
Calgary (4-5) trailed 19-17 at halftime, led 24-20 after three quarters and was tied 30-30 late before Toronto (4-4) took over at its own 54-yard line with 1:32 remaining and drove to the Calgary four-yard line for the winning kick. Calgary got the ball back with three seconds left, but Benji Franklin intercepted Vernon Adams Jr.'s Hail Mary attempt.
Quincy Vaughn opened the scoring on a one-yard run at 3:36 of the first quarter, two plays after Damon Webb returned a fumble by Sam Hicks 45 yards on Toronto's first offensive play. Hicks tied the game at 9:11 with a five-yard touchdown catch from Chad Kelly.
Janarion Grant returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown at 4:37 of the second quarter, and the convert attempt failed. Jude McAtamney answered with a 27-yard field goal at 9:30, and Lidster made it 16-10 from 33 yards at 12:40. Adams scored on a six-yard run at 14:23 to put Calgary in front 17-16, and Lidster closed the half with a 52-yard field goal.
James Burnip's 51-yard punt single at 2:40 of the third quarter made it 20-17 Toronto. Adrian Greene then intercepted Kelly and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown at 9:42 to give Calgary a 24-20 lead.
Lidster's 19-yard field goal at 1:42 of the fourth quarter cut the margin to 24-23, and McAtamney replied from 32 yards at 4:46. Hicks ran 40 yards for a touchdown at 9:57 to put Toronto ahead 30-27, and McAtamney tied the game with a 46-yard field goal. Calgary's next possession ended when Dedrick Mills was stopped short on third-and-one near midfield.
Kelly finished 30-of-43 for 349 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Calgary forced five turnovers, including two interceptions by Ben Labrosse, who moved into the league lead with five this season. Adams was 12-of-24 for 159 yards with two interceptions, his first of the season. Damonte Coxie caught eight passes for 161 yards, and Mills rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries. Toronto outgained Calgary 454-267.
