CALGARY — The Calgary Wranglers battled back in the second period but dropped a 6-3 decision to the Colorado Eagles on Friday afternoon at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Colorado set the tone early, controlling play through the opening 20 minutes and building a cushion that Calgary spent the rest of the afternoon chasing.

The Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 shot advantage before Maroš Jedlička finished a 3-on-1 rush high glove side to open the scoring. Tye Felhaber added another later in the period, tapping in a backdoor feed to make it 2-0.

Calgary answered late in the frame when captain Clark Bishop sent a puck toward the slot that deflected off a defender and past Trent Miner, cutting the lead to 2-1. The response didn’t hold for long. Alex Barré-Boulet restored a two-goal edge before the break, finishing a cross-slot pass to give Colorado a 3-1 lead after one.

Despite being outshot 19-4 in the first, the Wranglers found a push in the second.

After Danil Gushchin made it 4-1 on the power play, Calgary responded with back-to-back goals. Sam Morton snapped a shot glove side from the top of the circle, and Turner Ottenbreit finished a clean three-way passing play to pull the Wranglers within one at 4-3.

That was as close as it got.

Colorado’s power play delivered again late in the period, with Jack Ahcan drifting into space and beating Ivan Prosvetov at 13:47 of the second to extend the lead to 5-3.

The Eagles carried a 29-13 shot advantage through two periods and added one more goal in the third. Tristen Nielsen scored on the power play at 9:30, with Ahcan and T.J. Tynan picking up the assists to make it 6-3.

Miner finished with 22 saves on 25 shots (.880) for Colorado, while Prosvetov turned aside 40 of 46 shots (.870) for Calgary.

The Wranglers showed life in the middle frame, but the early deficit and Colorado’s power play proved too much to overcome.
