TORONTO — The Memorial Cup is headed back to Québec City.

The Canadian Hockey League announced Thursday that the Québec Remparts have been selected to host the 2028 Memorial Cup presented by Kubota, to be played at Vidéotron Centre in the spring of 2028. The tournament will be the 108th edition of the CHL championship and the first one held in Québec City since 2015. Dates will be announced later.

The Remparts took the bid over the Moncton Wildcats. The two clubs were named finalists in July, and a five-member site selection committee reviewed written bids, heard presentations and made site visits before deciding, scoring each bid on business operations, local atmosphere and community engagement, event logistics and hockey operations.

“We are excited to bring the 2028 Memorial Cup presented by Kubota to Québec City,” CHL president Dan MacKenzie said in the league’s release. “The Remparts and their partners presented a compelling vision backed by a passionate hockey community and proven experience hosting major events.”

The city is no stranger to the event. Québec City staged the 1971 championship and hosted the tournament in 1991, 2003 and 2015, and the Remparts have won the Memorial Cup three times — in 1971, 2006 and 2023. The 2023 title was the fourth in a row for a QMJHL club, the longest run by one league since the tournament went to a round-robin format in 1972, and the Remparts remain the most recent QMJHL team to lift the trophy.

As host club, Québec takes one of the four places in the 2028 tournament, alongside the playoff champions of the QMJHL, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League.

The road there runs through Guelph first. The Guelph Storm host the 2027 Memorial Cup from May 20 to 30, 2027, and the most recent edition, played in Kelowna this past spring, finished with the Kitchener Rangers beating the Everett Silvertips 6-2 in the final — a third consecutive championship for the OHL.
