Baucom's early goal lifts Calgary Wild to 1-0 win at AFC Toronto

TORONTO — Jorian Baucom scored in the fifth minute and the Calgary Wild made the early goal stand up the rest of the way, beating AFC Toronto 1-0 on Sunday at BMO Field in Northern Super League play.

Baucom struck before Toronto had settled, finishing the game's opening goal five minutes in. No assist was listed on the goal.

Toronto controlled the match everywhere except the scoreboard. The hosts finished with 65 per cent of possession, completed 469 passes to Calgary's 269, and outshot the Wild 27-8. Seven of Toronto's shots hit the target, and not one of them produced a goal.

Baucom finished with just two attempts, both on target, one of them the winner. Mya Jones and Josie Aulicino recorded Calgary's other shots on target, Aulicino's coming in the second half. Toronto midfielder Colby Barnett dictated play with a match-high 104 touches and 86 passes but did not attempt a shot, while Lena Silano finished with a match-high nine attempts and five shots on target.

Toronto pressed after halftime, and Calgary goalkeeper Sarah Keilty-Dilling was called into action in the 76th minute, making a save to protect the one-goal lead. She finished with six saves and the clean sheet, and defender Grace Stordy led the Wild with 71 touches. Sabrina D'Angelo made three saves for Toronto; the only shot that beat her was the winner.

Calgary-born forward Kaylee Hunter lined up against her hometown club for Toronto, wearing No. 11, and finished with six attempts and one shot on target. Hunter earned her first senior start for Canada earlier this month.

The win came against the run of play, but Calgary's finishing and goalkeeping made the difference: outshot 27-8 and out-possessed all afternoon, the Wild scored five minutes in and never gave the lead back.
