Supra strike twice early to beat Cavalry 2-1 in semifinal first leg

LAVAL, Que. — FC Supra du Québec scored twice in the first nine minutes and held on to beat Cavalry FC 2-1 in the first leg of their Canadian Premier League semifinal on Sunday at Stade Boréale.

Zachary Brault-Guillard opened the scoring in the fourth minute, finishing a pass from Loïc Kwemi. Five minutes later Cavalry defender Eryk Kobza put the ball into his own net, and the Shield winners were down 2-0 before the match had settled.

Tobias Warschewski pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, scoring at 45+1 to cut the deficit in half before the break.

Neither side scored in the second half. Cavalry finished with the higher expected-goals figure on the club's stat sheet, 2.09 to 1.05, but could not find an equalizer. Supra won five corners to Cavalry's three, the sides were whistled for 23 fouls each, and Cavalry took two of the match's three yellow cards.

The loss was Cavalry's first against Supra this season. The clubs met four times in the regular season, with Cavalry winning three and drawing one, including a 6-0 win at ATCO Field on September 25.

Cavalry, who won the CPL Shield with 60 points and are chasing a league and playoff double, now trail the fourth-place club by a goal heading home. Supra were playing the first playoff match in club history.

The second leg is Saturday, November 7 at ATCO Field in Calgary, kicking off at 3 p.m. MT. The winner of the tie advances to the single-match CPL final on November 21 or 22.
