Shapovalov retires in third set against Khachanov in Paris

PARIS — Denis Shapovalov retired from his first-round match at the Paris Masters on Monday, handing Karen Khachanov a 6-3, 7-6(6), 1-4 win by retirement.

Shapovalov dropped the opening set, took the second in a tiebreak and broke for a 3-1 lead in the third. Play then paused for a medical evaluation on the Canadian. He resumed and held serve for 4-1 before retiring from the match.

The numbers had been running his way. Shapovalov hit eight aces, landed 72 percent of his first serves, struck 30 winners to Khachanov's 18 and won more points overall, 92 to 89. He saved six of the nine break points he faced and converted two of his three break chances.

The official match page gave no reason for the retirement beyond the medical evaluation.
