Castillo's last-second field goal lifts Bombers past Stampeders 30-28

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders erased an early eight-point deficit, built a halftime lead and appeared poised to steal their season opener before Sergio Castillo's 38-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 30-28 victory Friday night at McMahon Stadium.



Calgary trailed 27-21 late in the fourth quarter before Vernon Adams Jr. led a 104-yard touchdown drive that culminated in his three-yard rushing touchdown with 1:04 remaining. The score gave the Stampeders a 28-27 lead and brought the crowd of 17,743 to its feet.



But Winnipeg answered immediately.



Ontaria Wilson opened the ensuing drive with a 27-yard reception into Calgary territory before Brady Oliveira helped move the Blue Bombers into field-goal range. Castillo then drilled the game-winning kick on the final play of the night.



"It was a battle, dog fight," Calgary linebacker Marquel Lee said. "Offence went ahead, scored, and we just got to do our job at the end of the game."



Winnipeg struck first.



The Blue Bombers marched 80 yards on their opening possession, capped by Oliveira's 19-yard touchdown run. A kickoff single extended the lead to 8-0 midway through the first quarter.



Calgary answered early in the second.



Dedrick Mills sparked an 11-play, 70-yard drive with runs of 16 and 11 yards before short-yardage quarterback Quincy Vaughn plunged in from one yard out. Jude McAtamney's convert cut Winnipeg's lead to 8-7.



The Stampeders then seized momentum.



After Clarence Hicks recorded Calgary's first sack of the season, Adams connected with Jalen Philpot for a 51-yard gain to the Winnipeg 25-yard line. A roughing-the-passer penalty moved Calgary to the one, where Mills powered into the end zone to give Calgary its first lead at 14-8.



Winnipeg responded after Trey Vaval's 53-yard punt return set up the Blue Bombers in Calgary territory. Vaval finished the night with 105 punt-return yards on four attempts. Backup quarterback Bryce Perkins scored from one yard out to restore Winnipeg's lead at 15-14 with 2:49 remaining in the half.



The Stampeders had another answer.



Mills ripped off a 39-yard run to the Winnipeg 40-yard line, and four plays later Adams found Erik Brooks for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The score put Calgary back in front 21-15 before Winnipeg added a late single to make it 21-16 at halftime.



Mills was the focal point of Calgary's offence throughout the first half and finished the night with 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.



The momentum shifted after the break.



Winnipeg opened the third quarter with a touchdown drive highlighted by completions to Wilson and Nic Demski before Tim White hauled in a touchdown reception. The convert and another single pushed the Blue Bombers ahead 24-21.



Calgary's next opportunity stalled after penalties moved the offence behind the chains. Adams later scrambled for 18 yards but lost a fumble near midfield.



Calgary's defence responded immediately.



On Winnipeg's next offensive snap, defensive lineman Tre'Mon Morris-Brash intercepted a tipped Zach Collaros pass and returned possession to Calgary. The turnover ultimately led to no points when McAtamney missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt wide right.



Castillo later extended Winnipeg's lead to 27-21 with a 31-yard field goal following an 11-play, 83-yard drive.



That left Calgary needing a touchdown.



Starting from their own six-yard line and trailing by six, the Stampeders put together their most impressive drive of the night.



Philpot made a 15-yard reception to create breathing room. Mills followed with consecutive runs that pushed him over the 100-yard mark. Adams connected with Tevin Jones for 15 yards and later found Philpot twice more as Calgary crossed midfield.



Then came the biggest play.



Facing second-and-10 at the Winnipeg 35, Adams rolled left and found Brooks along the sideline for a 32-yard gain to the three-yard line.



One play later, Adams kept the ball himself and walked untouched into the end zone.



After the convert, Calgary led 28-27 with just over a minute remaining.



"I like kind of playing fast," Adams said of the up-tempo attack that fueled the drive. "It doesn't give you time to think, and you just have to react to what you see."



For a moment, it appeared Calgary had completed the comeback.



Instead, Winnipeg delivered the final answer.



Wilson's 27-yard catch immediately flipped field position before Oliveira helped move the Blue Bombers into range for Castillo's game winner.



"They outplayed us in the second half," Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson said. "I felt like they won the line of scrimmage."



Dickenson also pointed to Calgary moving away from Mills during stretches of the second half.



"We got away from Mills a little bit," he said.



Philpot led Calgary receivers with five catches for 96 yards, while Brooks added two receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.



Adams completed 17 of 27 passes (63.0%) for 239 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while adding 48 rushing yards and the go-ahead touchdown on the ground.



Oliveira paced Winnipeg with 115 rushing yards, 43 receiving yards and a touchdown. Collaros completed 17 of 28 passes (60.7%) for 233 yards, one touchdown and one interception as the Blue Bombers opened the season at 1-0. Winnipeg also recorded four sacks to Calgary's one.



Despite the disappointment, Adams remained focused on the long view.



"No one wins or loses the Grey Cup in Game 1," he said.



The Stampeders head into their bye week at 0-1 before returning to McMahon Stadium on June 20 to host the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
