Flames prospects, Alberta talent headline Canada’s summer showcase roster

WINDSOR, Ont. — Canada’s road to the 2027 World Juniors in Edmonton and Red Deer will begin over 2,500 kilometres east in Windsor.



Calgary Flames prospects Carson Carels, Cole Reschny and Chase Harrington are among 32 players invited to Canada’s World Junior Summer Showcase, running July 26 through Aug. 1 at the WFCU Centre.



The roster also includes four Alberta products: Calgary defenceman Jackson Smith, Fort Saskatchewan’s Keaton Verhoeff, Lacombe’s Daxon Rudolph and Sherwood Park forward Braeden Cootes.



Carels, selected sixth overall by Calgary in the 2026 NHL Draft, and Reschny, the Flames’ first-round pick in 2025, are among eight players eligible to return from Canada’s bronze-medal team at the 2026 World Juniors. Cootes and Verhoeff also played on that team.



Harrington gives Calgary a third prospect at the showcase after the Flames selected the Spokane Chiefs forward 36th overall in June.



The group is loaded with high-end NHL talent. Twenty-eight of the 31 CHL-developed invitees have been drafted, including 13 first-round selections. Rudolph went fourth overall to Buffalo in 2026, while Verhoeff was selected ninth by San Jose and Smith went 14th to Columbus in 2025.



“We’re excited to announce the 32 players who will attend the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor as we begin our preparation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship,” Canada general manager Alan Millar said. “This is an important opportunity for our staff to evaluate a talented group of players against top international competition while continuing to build our identity as a team.”



Players developed in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL account for 31 of the 32 roster spots, including all four goaltenders and all 10 defencemen. Twelve invitees were developed in the WHL.



Calgary native Landon DuPont was also invited to the showcase but will instead represent Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, scheduled for Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton.



Canada will practice July 27 and 28 before facing Sweden on July 29, Finland on July 30 and the United States on Aug. 1.



The showcase is the first major evaluation point ahead of the 2027 World Juniors, which will run from Dec. 26, 2026, through Jan. 5, 2027, in Edmonton and Red Deer.
