Hutchings returns as Stampeders lock up All-CFL defensive anchor through 2028
CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders have brought back one of the CFL's premier defensive linemen, signing U.S. defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings to a contract that keeps him in red and white through the 2028 season.
The move reunites Calgary with a player who became a cornerstone of the Stampeders' defence before departing for an NFL opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this year.
"It's great to have Hutch back," Stampeders general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson said in a statement. "For him to make a three-year commitment to us is a huge deal. He was a force up front for us last season and his return will further bolster our defence and make us a better team."
Hutchings was released by Calgary on Jan. 6 after earning a chance with Minnesota. His return restores a dominant presence to the interior of the Stampeders' defensive front.
The former Texas Tech standout started all 17 regular-season games for Calgary in 2025 and delivered one of the league's best seasons by a defensive tackle. He recorded 39 defensive tackles, three tackles for loss, eight sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two knockdowns while earning both West Division All-CFL and All-CFL honours.
Hutchings also elevated his play in the post-season, registering two sacks and a knockdown in Calgary's Western Semi-Final matchup against BC.
"I'm excited to be back in the Red and White," Hutchings said. "I'm looking forward to being a part of bringing a Grey Cup back to Calgary."
Originally signing with the Stampeders in October 2024, Hutchings appeared in 19 games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. His return gives Calgary proven pass-rush production, experience and continuity on a defence expected to be among the club's strengths in 2026.
Before turning professional, Hutchings made 57 starts in 62 games over six seasons at Texas Tech. He compiled 193 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and one pass breakup for the Red Raiders.
For a Calgary team with Grey Cup aspirations, bringing back one of the CFL's most disruptive defenders may prove to be one of the organization's most important moves of the year.
