Pickard shuts out Wranglers in 1-0 loss to Condors

BAKERSFIELD, CA — The Calgary Wranglers generated chances and finished with a slight edge in shots. It still wasn’t enough.

Calgary was shut out 1-0 by the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday night, with the game decided by a single second-period goal and a perfect night from Calvin Pickard.

The only goal came at 1:28 of the second period, when Atro Leppanen scored his ninth of the season, finishing a play set up by Viljami Marjala and Quinn Hutson.

That was all Bakersfield would need.

Calgary pushed back, outshooting the Condors 22-20, including a 10-shot third period, but couldn’t solve Pickard, who stopped all 22 shots he faced.

Arsenii Sergeev gave the Wranglers a chance, turning aside 19 of 20 shots for a .950 save percentage.

The Wranglers went 0-for-7 on the power play, while Bakersfield went 0-for-2. Despite generating seven opportunities with the man advantage, Calgary couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Bakersfield took more penalties, finishing with 18 minutes to Calgary’s eight, but kept the Wranglers off the board.
