Roughriders Outlast Stampeders 40-37 in Overtime
CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders rallied to force overtime after Tyreik McAllister's 120-yard missed-field-goal return touchdown sparked a comeback, but Tommy Stevens scored on a one-yard run in the extra frame to lift the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 40-37 victory Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.
The win improved Saskatchewan to 2-0, while Calgary fell to 0-2 despite erasing a 14-point second-half deficit and tying the game with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
Trevor Harris threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns for the Roughriders, while Kian Schaffer-Baker recorded eight receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Saskatchewan opened the scoring on a 27-yard field goal by Alex Hale before Stevens added a rushing touchdown early in the second quarter to make it 10-0.
Calgary responded after Clarence Hicks forced a fumble and Marquel Lee recovered deep in Saskatchewan territory. The turnover led to a Quincy Vaughn touchdown that cut the deficit to 10-7.
The Roughriders answered with two touchdown receptions by Schaffer-Baker to build a 23-7 lead late in the first half.
The Stampeders got a crucial boost before halftime when McAllister returned a missed Saskatchewan field goal 120 yards for a touchdown, trimming the deficit to 23-14.
"We got a lifeline there with Tyreek at the end of the first half," Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson said. "I don't know if we can come back in that game without that play."
McAtamney's field goal early in the third quarter cut Saskatchewan's lead to six before Harris connected with KeeSean Johnson for a touchdown. Saskatchewan added the two-point convert to restore a 31-17 advantage.
Calgary continued to battle back in the fourth quarter.
Vaughn scored his second rushing touchdown of the night before Vernon Adams Jr. found Tevin Jones for the game-tying touchdown with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
"I just started off way too slow in the first half," Adams said. "My guys gave me a chance, and I just gotta make some more plays for my team early on and often."
After both teams converted field goals in overtime, McAtamney connected again to give Calgary a 37-34 lead.
Saskatchewan answered by moving deep into Calgary territory before Stevens punched in the winning touchdown from one yard out.
Harris finished 23-of-36 passing without an interception. Schaffer-Baker accounted for two of Saskatchewan's three receiving touchdowns, while Johnson added the other.
Adams completed 20 of 30 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown for Calgary. Dedrick Mills rushed for 103 yards on 15 carries, while Hicks recorded two sacks and a forced fumble.
Despite the defeat, Dickenson praised his team's resilience.
"We're making some plays and we're getting ourselves in position to win," Dickenson said. "We just got to find a way to win."
