Switzerland Claims Group B, Canada Advances to Knockout Stage

VANCOUVER — Rubín Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored 11 minutes apart early in the second half as Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 on Wednesday to secure first place in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the loss, Canada advanced to the knockout stage as the Group B runner-up and will now turn its attention to a Round of 32 matchup in Los Angeles.

After a tightly contested opening half, Switzerland struck less than a minute after the restart. Vargas found himself with space inside the penalty area and made no mistake in the 46th minute, giving the Swiss a 1-0 lead.

Switzerland doubled its advantage in the 57th minute when Canada's defense lost track of Johan Manzambi in the box. The 20-year-old midfielder from Geneva, who plays for Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, was left completely unmarked and finished for his third goal of the tournament.

The two-goal cushion appeared to put Switzerland firmly in control, but Canada responded with one of its finest attacking sequences of the tournament.

In the 76th minute, Nathan Saliba produced an exceptional touch to bring down a long ball from Luc de Fougerolles before volleying it across the area where Promise David met it with an airborne finish to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The goal transformed the final stages.

Canada poured forward in search of an equalizer, generating sustained pressure and forcing Switzerland deeper into its own half. The Canadians finished the match with advantages in shots (13-6), shots on target (7-4) and corner kicks (7-2), but were unable to find the second goal that would have altered the Group B standings.

While Switzerland controlled possession for much of the afternoon, it was Canada's inability to recover from two costly defensive breakdowns early in the second half that ultimately proved decisive.

The victory completed an unbeaten group-stage campaign for Switzerland, which finished atop Group B with seven points. The Swiss advanced to the knockout stage after recording wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada, along with a draw against Qatar.

Canada, meanwhile, finished second in the group and continued a promising tournament run that included a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar and a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Switzerland's reward for winning the group is a Round of 32 match at BC Place on July 2 against one of the tournament's highest-ranked third-place finishers from Groups E, F, G, I or J.

Canada now awaits the runner-up from Group A in the Round of 32. South Korea and the Czechia remain among the leading contenders for that position entering the final round of Group A play.

For Switzerland, the result secured the Group B crown. For Canada, the defeat stung, but the larger objective remains intact as the Canadians move on to the knockout stage with their World Cup hopes still alive.
