Sharangovich scores late as Flames beat Hurricanes 3-2 for first home win
CALGARY — Yegor Sharangovich scored with 4:28 left in the third period and the Calgary Flames beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Sunday at Scotiabank Saddledome for their first home win of the season.
The win snapped the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes' seven-game winning streak and ended Carolina's franchise-record five-game road winning run. Calgary improved to 2-6-0, while Carolina fell to 7-2-1 on the second night of a back-to-back.
After a scoreless first period, Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring at 6:09 of the second, lifting a rebound over Devin Cooley's right pad to give Carolina a 1-0 lead. Nicolas Deslauriers, who drew into the lineup when Mark Jankowski was scratched before puck drop with a lower-body injury, took the initial shot and picked up the assist.
Matvei Gridin tied the game at 18:30 of the second with his first goal of the season, a wrist shot from the high slot to the top corner over Brandon Bussi's glove.
Morgan Frost put Calgary ahead 2-1 just over a minute later, tapping in a Zayne Parekh pass on the power play at 19:39. Joel Farabee started the passing play and recorded his team-leading fifth assist. The goal came in Frost's 400th NHL game.
The lead lasted 17 seconds. Jalen Chatfield tied the game 2-2 at 19:56, his shot from the far boards finding its way through traffic and into the top corner. Jaccob Slavin and Sebastian Aho assisted.
Sharangovich broke the tie at 15:32 of the third, one-timing a cross-ice saucer pass from Frost past Bussi for his second goal of the season. Frost finished with a goal and an assist.
Cooley made 34 saves for Calgary, and Bussi stopped 31 for Carolina. The Hurricanes outshot the Flames 36-34.
